The IWC Pilot’s Watch Collection was especially designed to meet the needs of the aviators, who had to navigate with the help of pocket watches only. Therefore, the collection was a rare invention, and was a boon for the pilots. Equipped with anti-magnetic escapements, and luminescent filled hour markers and hands, the watches are capable of tracking even the short intervals of time.
Classic appeal and novel technology are the hallmarks of the IW387802 Pilot’s Watch Spitfire Chronograph, with first in-house IWC movements. Beautifully refined out of a 43mm satin finished stainless steel case, polished bevelled edges, bezel and crown along with chronograph functions, the timepiece proudly exhibits a luxurious appeal. The meticulously etched out sun-brush pattern on this “Ardoise” slate grey dial gives more meaning to this aviation watch. This distinct dial with its dark patterns, and date display window at the 3 o’clock position has taken its inspiration from the traditional altimeter, and hence underlines the traditional instrument look of this Spitfire’s watch. The dial is aesthetically designed with delicate engraved patterns comprising lume-coated raised Arabic numerals and indices, including ‘’propeller’’ style hands. The dial also houses an independent small seconds’ sub-dial with a fine concentric circle.
What further intensifies the look of this timepiece is its Alligator leather brown strap that gives more comfort and appeal to the watch.
The IWC Pilot’s Watch Spitfire Chronograph IW387802 flaunts a Spitfire engraved feature on its case back, so that the wearer can gaze at the calibre movement of this elegant timepiece. Being water-resistant to 60 metres, this exquisite timepiece can easily withstand accidental water splurges. The watch is driven by automatic movement, Calibre 89365 that beats at 28,800 vph. It contains 35 jewels, and is powered with a stunning power reserve of almost 68 hours. The watch is also embedded with an inner soft iron case, which provides protection against magnetic fields. The Flyback function of the watch, that comes with a single push button, allows for an immediate restarting of the watch, thus, preventing you from first stopping, resetting and then again restarting the stopwatch.
Pocket watches used by pilots were the norm when aviation first became a science. IWC soon changed that by revolutionising wristwatches wholly modelled for pilots. In 1936 the first special Pilot’s watch was introduced into the market, fitted and customized only for the pilot’s convenience. In 1940 the world was introduced to the Big Pilot’s watch which was a classic rendition of a cockpit design in an aircraft. The equipment was laid out in accordance to the placing of instruments in a cockpit. This was soon followed by IWC’s cleverly engineered Mark XII which was crafted as a tribute to the Royal Air force in 1948 and has been loved and used for more than 2 score years till date.
The first few editions of the Pilot's watches were crafted with sound and pleasing aesthetics. Built with a clean and simplistic look in mind, the watch had a rotating bezel with an arrowhead index to help keep track of short periods of time as well as an antimagnetic escapement incorporated in it. The luminescent hands and numerals provide high contrast and great visualization. These luxury time-pieces have bold, rugged straps that embody the spirit of the adventurer. Sapphire glass in highly polished form is used in the making of these time-pieces to provide resistance to air pressure. This is purely a traveller’s watch. Many outstanding modifications and improved movements have been implemented in this collections design since 2012. The cases are made from a variety of dependable and fashionable material such as rose gold, stainless steel and ceramic. The dial comes in individualistic colours including black, blue, silver and brown, pampering customers till they are spoilt for choice.
The IWC’s Pilot's watch family welcomed in its midst a fresh new edition - the Top Gun watch, named in honour of the special training course offered by the United States Navy Fighter Weapons School, the ‘Strike Fighter Tactics instructor’ which has been famously dubbed ‘Top Gun’. Five new intricately designed models of the Top Gun collection came out to the fore in 2012, more than enough for Top Gun to delineate and become an independent line altogether.
