Established in the 1800s, IWC as a watch brand has carved its own niche in the industry. Known for its consistent advancements in watch technology, the brand is popular for its anti-gravity and anti-magnetic movements. An integrated brand, IWC both creates and assembles all parts of a watch in-house.
The IWC Ingenieur Chronograph Silberpfeil IW378505 is an edition limited to just 1000 pieces that pays ode to the Mercedes Silver Arrow W25 race car. Taking cue from the car’s dashboard, which has a circular grain decoration surrounded by steel, the watch features a similar looking grain dial and a flyback chronograph function.
Belonging to the IWC Ingenieur Chronograph Silberpfeil collection, the watch sports a round silver dial with the case made in polished stainless steel. The case is 15 mm thick has a diameter of 45 mm. It has a polished sapphire crystal glass that is scratch-resistant. The strap is made of brown leather with a tang buckle, a fixed stainless steel bezel with a tachymeter scale, a screw-down crown and an exhibition case back. The analog dial is complimented with index hour markers and silver tone hands that are both luminescent. It also has minute markers along the outer rim of the dial.
The IW378505 has an automatic date function located at the 6 o’clock position in the dial. Equipped with the IWC Calibre C9361 movement, the timepiece boasts of being water-resistant to a depth of 120 meters and features 38 jewels. It has an automatic date function located at the 3 o'clock position. The watch has two sub-dials displaying 60-second and 60-minute counters, and a power reserve of 68 hours when fully wound.
The IWC Ingenieur collection was born and perfected as an answer to cumbersome drawbacks from using too many technical appliances in wristwatches. These watches were designed to reduce ill-effects caused by magnetic fields encountered by engineers. Extensive modifications to stem this problem and a unique bidirectional automatic movement by Albert Pellaton paved the way for the Ingenieur collection’s launch in 1955. The ingenious winding system perfected by Pellaton winds movement when the rotor moves either way, infinitely more efficient than the common restrictive unidirectional movement. The most distinctive Ingenieur watch of that period however, was crafted by the watch-making maestro Gerald Genta, who infused brilliant engineering in the making of the Ingenieur SL or Jumbo Ingenieur as it is often called.
The Ingenieur novelty lies in capturing succinctly the essence of that which it emulates. IWC famously partnered with Mercedes AMG in year 2005 and brought forth two titanium cased models creatively emulating race-car styles. The 2013 Ingenieur watch collection showers more affection on the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 collaboration. The watch exudes performance efficiency, energy conservation and sporty appeal. Materials such as ceramic, titanium and carbon commonly used in Formula One have been incorporated in this collection to showcase their strong bond. An ideal example of this is the Ingenieur Automatic Carbon Performance Ceramic which has been styled primarily from material typically used in motor racing.
IWC Schaffhausen grandly celebrated its partnership with the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One team by putting up an exclusive pop-up exhibition in The Watch Gallery at Selfridges Wonder Room, London in May 2013. The exhibition proudly displayed the suave new look of the remodelled 2013 Ingenieur collection. IWC also celebrated the unveiling of two brand new models in the year 2014 in Schaffhausen, the Ingenieur Automatic Carbon Performance Ceramic as well as Ingenieur Dual Time.
