The first Tank was created by Louis Cartier in 1917, as a present for General John Pershing of the American Expeditionary Force. As its name suggests, the watch was created to honour the indestructible army vehicles used by the Western Front, with its powerful lines and sharp features. The collection offers several variations such as the Anglaise, Francaise, Americaine, Solo, Louis Cartier, and MC.
The Tank Solo model number W5200028 for men, adds dimensions of modifications to the original for a heightened experience. With a rectangular shape distinctive of the Tank, the case is made of steel and has dimensions 31mm x 40.85mm with the minimal thickness of 7.65mm. The parallel brancards rest atop a silvered and opaline dial. Hourly intervals are marked on the dial by the Cartier’s trademark black Roman numerals. A secondary track located inside marks smaller denominations of time for precise reading. The crown is beaded intricately and imbedded with the traditional blue synthetic spinel. A sapphire crystal glass casing on the dial protects it from scratches. The bracelet is crafted of stainless steel with powerful lines that are strongly reminiscent of a tank’s track. It contains alternately brushed and polished links and attaches to the wrist by means of a hidden folding clasp.
The mechanical movement of the Tank Solo W5200028 features automatic winding for accurate time reading. Cartier’s calibre 049, sporting 21 jewels, beats at 28,800 vph and offers a power reserve of 42 hours. Three sword shaped hands made of blued steel allow the watch to perform hour, minute and second functions. A calendar aperture located at 6 o’clock displays the date for an advanced horologic experience. The watch is water resistant to a depth of 30m.
The Tank made its debut on the big screen in 1926, in the movie ‘The Son of the Sheikh.’ Actor Rudolph Valentino refused to remove his Tank before appearing on screen, causing one of the most popular anachronisms in cinematic history.
The First World War succeeded in inspiring a whole line of watches when Louis Cartier, the founder of the iconic Cartier brand fashioned watches inspired by the Renault tanks introduced by the Americans on the Western Front. These intricately designed timepieces born from an unusual inspiration were eventually introduced by the brand as the Tank collection in 1917, before they were launched in the markets in 1919.
The Tank collection has cases available in both rectangle and square shapes similar to the proportions of the tough war-machine. The case is further accentuated with a cabochon crown and sword shaped hour and minute hands set in a classic dial with Roman numerals, exuding a vintage feel. The distinctively patterned bracelet is the highlight of this collection. It consists of rectangular links ingeniously integrated with vertical sidebars, which bring to mind the rugged construction of the tank’s tracks used during war.
Originally introduced as far back as World War I, today this coveted collection is crafted using cutting-edge technology to feature enhanced functions such as calendar and power reserve displays. They also offer a broad range of movements from the simple yet precise Quartz to the technologically complicated and unerringly accurate automatic.
The Tank collection finds its manifestation in 6 ranges: Francaise, Americaine, Anglaise, MC, Solo and Louis Cartier.
