Cartier was established in 1847 by Louis-Francois Cartier, and soon grew to be ranked amongst the premier watchmakers of the world. The Tank is one of the most iconic collections launched by the brand in 1919. The first Tank, however, was created in 1917 by Loius Cartier himself as a gift for General John Pershing, as a replica of its namesake when it comes to a powerful performance and striking features. With several versions being made today, including the Louis Cartier, the Francaise, the Americaine, the Anglaise, the Solo, and the MC, the collection is a true collectible for the watch enthusiast.
The Tank Solo model number W5200026 for men, offers an ideal blend of contemporary technology and a minimalistic traditional make. Unique to the collection, the rectangular case is crafted of 18K pink gold and steel into a size of 31 x 40.85 mm with a thickness of merely 7.65 mm. The inimitable crown is made of 18K pink gold, beaded across its diameter, and inlaid with a blue synthetic spinel. Silvered and opaline with impeccable finish, the dial is marked with Cartier’s traditional Roman numerals in black. An interior rail-track marks smaller denominations of time. The round scaled alligator skin strap attaches to the wrist by means of an 18K pink gold ardillon buckle.
The mechanical movement of the watch operates on the Cartier calibre 049, to give the wearer an accurate timekeeping experience. The movement beats at 28,800 vph with 21 jewels, and a power reserve of 42 hours. With three blued steel sword shaped hands, the watch provides the hour, minute, and second functions, and a date window located at 6 o’clock gives enhanced horologic functions. Sapphire crystal glass casing on the dial protects it from scratches and renders it water resistant to a depth of 30 m.
The First World War succeeded in inspiring a whole line of watches when Louis Cartier, the founder of the iconic Cartier brand fashioned watches inspired by the Renault tanks introduced by the Americans on the Western Front. These intricately designed timepieces born from an unusual inspiration were eventually introduced by the brand as the Tank collection in 1917, before they were launched in the markets in 1919.
The Tank collection has cases available in both rectangle and square shapes similar to the proportions of the tough war-machine. The case is further accentuated with a cabochon crown and sword shaped hour and minute hands set in a classic dial with Roman numerals, exuding a vintage feel. The distinctively patterned bracelet is the highlight of this collection. It consists of rectangular links ingeniously integrated with vertical sidebars, which bring to mind the rugged construction of the tank’s tracks used during war.
Originally introduced as far back as World War I, today this coveted collection is crafted using cutting-edge technology to feature enhanced functions such as calendar and power reserve displays. They also offer a broad range of movements from the simple yet precise Quartz to the technologically complicated and unerringly accurate automatic.
The Tank collection finds its manifestation in 6 ranges: Francaise, Americaine, Anglaise, MC, Solo and Louis Cartier.
