1914 saw the world in the throes of the devastating World War I, which was a massacre on a scale never witnessed before. The Tank collection by Cartier was a result of this influential period in history. Commemorating the powerful vehicles used in that battle, the first model of this line was created in 1917 as a gift to General Pershing, and made available to the general public in 1919.
Cartier upholds its legacy of making watches that display superior artistic and technological skills in all the variations of this collection, which today include the Francaise, Americaine, Anglaise, Solo and Louis Cartier. The Tank Solo is a culmination of the collection’s iconic aesthetics, with a contemporary twist to reflect the evolving world.
The Tank Solo model number W5200014 is an ideal timepiece for female as well as male watch aficionados. With the collection’s distinctive rectangular steel case of dimensions 34.8 x 27.5mm and thickness 5.5mm, the watch offers an intermingling of the traditional and sophisticated. The clear dial is silvered and opaline. Cartier’s trademark black Roman numerals demarcate the hourly intervals with an interior minutes track for accurate time reading. Blued steel sword shaped hands point out the time precisely. The inimitable crown is beaded for an added element of intrigue, and is inlaid with a cabochon spinel, enhancing the appeal of the ensemble. Cartier Tank’s unique feature, the bracelet, is not lost upon this watch, as a steel chain reminiscent of the tracks of armoured tanks. Sapphire crystal glass shields the dial from scratches.
Powered by Cartier’s calibre 690 quartz movement, this timepiece is accurate in time telling. It is also water resistant to a depth of 30m.
Cartier has entertained multiple admirers from all walks of life, including royals like King Edward VII, Kate Middleton, Princess Caroline of Monaco, and Princess Diana. Watches from the Tank collection in particular were spotted on eminent personalities such as Michele Obama, and Mick Jagger.
The First World War succeeded in inspiring a whole line of watches when Louis Cartier, the founder of the iconic Cartier brand fashioned watches inspired by the Renault tanks introduced by the Americans on the Western Front. These intricately designed timepieces born from an unusual inspiration were eventually introduced by the brand as the Tank collection in 1917, before they were launched in the markets in 1919.
The Tank collection has cases available in both rectangle and square shapes similar to the proportions of the tough war-machine. The case is further accentuated with a cabochon crown and sword shaped hour and minute hands set in a classic dial with Roman numerals, exuding a vintage feel. The distinctively patterned bracelet is the highlight of this collection. It consists of rectangular links ingeniously integrated with vertical sidebars, which bring to mind the rugged construction of the tank’s tracks used during war.
Originally introduced as far back as World War I, today this coveted collection is crafted using cutting-edge technology to feature enhanced functions such as calendar and power reserve displays. They also offer a broad range of movements from the simple yet precise Quartz to the technologically complicated and unerringly accurate automatic.
The Tank collection finds its manifestation in 6 ranges: Francaise, Americaine, Anglaise, MC, Solo and Louis Cartier.
