Cartier has a legacy of crafting objects that are nothing short of masterpieces- with their superior aesthetics and contemporary technology- so much so, that King Edward VII of Britain called it “the King of Jewellers and the Jeweller to Kings.“ The Tank collection was launched in the market in 1919, and was first made by Louis Cartier himself in 1917 as a gift for General John Pershing. Watches from this line commemorate the significance of the World War I, with every line and contour reminiscent of the indestructible weaponry used in the battle. The Tank Solo, Anglaise, Francaise, Americaine, MC, and Louis Cartier are some of the editions of this line which have unexceptionally captured the hearts of all beholders.
The Tank Solo model number W5200005 is an iconic wristwatch for women, which incorporates all unique characteristics of the line, making it truly inimitable. A rectangular steel case, having dimensions of 31 x 24.4mm, with flat vertical brancards, highlights the distinguishing element of the collection. The clear opaline dial is silvered and marked into hours with Cartier’s traditional Italic bold Roman numerals. Minute divisions of time are demarcated by an inner rail-track. The two blued steel hands are shaped into swords, and move in perfect alignment to the markers. The traditional crown is beaded and inlaid with a blue synthetic cabochon shaped spinel. Made of round scaled alligator-skin, the strap heightens the elegance of the ensemble, and attaches to the wrist by means of a double adjustable folding buckle made of steel. Sapphire glass crystal ensures resistivity to scratches.
Powered by Cartier’s calibre 157, the watch has a quartz movement to keep precise time. The watch is also water resistant to a depth of 30 metres.
Cartier has entertained several glorified admirers over the years, including eminent personalities like Mick Jagger, Timothy Dalton, Tom Cruise, Michelle Obama and Kate Middleton, owing to its uncanny knack of pleasing the pickiest watch aficionado.
The First World War succeeded in inspiring a whole line of watches when Louis Cartier, the founder of the iconic Cartier brand fashioned watches inspired by the Renault tanks introduced by the Americans on the Western Front. These intricately designed timepieces born from an unusual inspiration were eventually introduced by the brand as the Tank collection in 1917, before they were launched in the markets in 1919.
The Tank collection has cases available in both rectangle and square shapes similar to the proportions of the tough war-machine. The case is further accentuated with a cabochon crown and sword shaped hour and minute hands set in a classic dial with Roman numerals, exuding a vintage feel. The distinctively patterned bracelet is the highlight of this collection. It consists of rectangular links ingeniously integrated with vertical sidebars, which bring to mind the rugged construction of the tank’s tracks used during war.
Originally introduced as far back as World War I, today this coveted collection is crafted using cutting-edge technology to feature enhanced functions such as calendar and power reserve displays. They also offer a broad range of movements from the simple yet precise Quartz to the technologically complicated and unerringly accurate automatic.
The Tank collection finds its manifestation in 6 ranges: Francaise, Americaine, Anglaise, MC, Solo and Louis Cartier.
