The legacy of Cartier is such that its magnificence in crafting exquisite hand pieces is world renowned. Created in 1917, the Tank collection is one of the most iconic creations of the brand. The first Tank watch was made by Louis Cartier himself as a gift for General Pershing, to commemorate the First World War. Since then, the collection has evolved to include several versions such as the Louis, Francaise, Americaine, Anglaise, Solo, and MC, all of which are the pinnacle of artistic superiority and technical mastery.
The Tank Francaise model number W51008Q3 for women, is a sleek and elegant piece with all the fascinating attributes that distinguish this collection. Typical to the line, the rectangular steel case is 25.35 x 20.3 mm sized, with a minimal thickness of 5.94 mm. The dial housed by this case is silvered and marked at hourly intervals by Cartier’s traditional bold Roman numerals in black. Smaller denominations of time are demarcated by an interior rail-track for greater accuracy in time reading. The crown, faceted to have 8 sides, is imbedded with a blue sapphire cabochon. Its steel bracelet boasts alternately brushed and polished pieces that add a dimension of intrigue to the watch, and fastens to the wrist by a triple folding steel buckle. Sapphire crystal glass casing on the dial renders it impervious to scratches.
Cartier’s calibre 057 powered quartz movement of the watch ensures an immaculate timekeeping experience. Two sword shaped blued steel hands provide the hour and minute functions. The watch is water resistant to a depth of 30m and can withstand light water splashes.
The wearers of Tank have an intense admiration for it, as is evinced by the fact that Rudolph Valentino, in the sets of The Son of the Sheik in 1926, refused to take off his Tank watch before going on screen, leading to a massive anachronism still remarked upon in the cinematic universe.
The First World War succeeded in inspiring a whole line of watches when Louis Cartier, the founder of the iconic Cartier brand fashioned watches inspired by the Renault tanks introduced by the Americans on the Western Front. These intricately designed timepieces born from an unusual inspiration were eventually introduced by the brand as the Tank collection in 1917, before they were launched in the markets in 1919.
The Tank collection has cases available in both rectangle and square shapes similar to the proportions of the tough war-machine. The case is further accentuated with a cabochon crown and sword shaped hour and minute hands set in a classic dial with Roman numerals, exuding a vintage feel. The distinctively patterned bracelet is the highlight of this collection. It consists of rectangular links ingeniously integrated with vertical sidebars, which bring to mind the rugged construction of the tank’s tracks used during war.
Originally introduced as far back as World War I, today this coveted collection is crafted using cutting-edge technology to feature enhanced functions such as calendar and power reserve displays. They also offer a broad range of movements from the simple yet precise Quartz to the technologically complicated and unerringly accurate automatic.
The Tank collection finds its manifestation in 6 ranges: Francaise, Americaine, Anglaise, MC, Solo and Louis Cartier.
