An exquisitely refined and timeless allure is echoed in the Tank de Cartier collection of wrist watches. This collection has been inspired by the iconic ‘Tank’ watch, which beautifully showcases the structural harmony of its namesake. The first Tank wristwatch was crafted in 1917, being inspired by minimalist design: four lines, with two parallel shafts made from gold or platinum, a sapphire cabochon on top of the winding crown and a leather strap. It encased a revolutionary square case, which soon became a legend in the world of watch making. Worn by Louis Cartier himself, the “Tank Louis Cartier” timepiece, a derivative of the Tank collection, sets the standards for all Tank watches. It embodies Louis Cartier’s contribution to ‘Modern style’ watch making, which was later renamed the ‘Art Deco’ movement.
The Tank Louis Cartier watch is sophistication embodied. This model comes affixed with a beaded 18 carat, pink gold crown set with a faceted sapphire cabochon on the case side. A classic silvered flinque dial is equipped with sunray texture that marks the time piece as the most distinguishable in its collection. The face contains painted black Roman numerals for hour markers and apple shaped hands crafted from blued steel that are characteristic to most Cartier watches. Unlike most Cartier watches, the tops of the lugs are rounded in contrast to the previously fashionable rectangular form and proud lines. The straps are famously made from brown semi-matte alligator-skin strap with adjustable 18 carat pink gold folding buckle. A sapphire crystal dome encases the watch face.
The Tank Louis Cartier, XL, watch model W1560003 is an immortal time piece containing the Cartier Caliber 9753 MC featuring a mechanical movement with manual winding. This time piece is encased in an 18 carat pink gold case dimensioned as 30 mm in diameter, 39.2 mm width and 8.3 mm thickness. The case is known to be water resistant to 30 meters/100 feet under water. The time piece carries a large date aperture at the 12 o’ clock position and the power reserve indicator sits at the 6 o’ clock hour marker.
The First World War succeeded in inspiring a whole line of watches when Louis Cartier, the founder of the iconic Cartier brand fashioned watches inspired by the Renault tanks introduced by the Americans on the Western Front. These intricately designed timepieces born from an unusual inspiration were eventually introduced by the brand as the Tank collection in 1917, before they were launched in the markets in 1919.
The Tank collection has cases available in both rectangle and square shapes similar to the proportions of the tough war-machine. The case is further accentuated with a cabochon crown and sword shaped hour and minute hands set in a classic dial with Roman numerals, exuding a vintage feel. The distinctively patterned bracelet is the highlight of this collection. It consists of rectangular links ingeniously integrated with vertical sidebars, which bring to mind the rugged construction of the tank’s tracks used during war.
Originally introduced as far back as World War I, today this coveted collection is crafted using cutting-edge technology to feature enhanced functions such as calendar and power reserve displays. They also offer a broad range of movements from the simple yet precise Quartz to the technologically complicated and unerringly accurate automatic.
The Tank collection finds its manifestation in 6 ranges: Francaise, Americaine, Anglaise, MC, Solo and Louis Cartier.
