The Tank is one of the most iconic line of watches made by Cartier. The first Tank was made by Louis Cartier himself in 1917 as a gift for General John Pershing of the American Expeditionary Force, in order to lay tribute to the First World War. Released for the public in 1919, watches from this collection featured parallel brancards and bracelets integrated into the case. Today, the Tank offers numerous variations such as the Louis Cartier, the Francaise, the Americaine, the Anglaise, the Solo, and the MC.
The Tank Anglaise model number W5310006 for men, sports a wide brancard made of steel and placed atop a rectangular case of 47 x 36.2 mm, with the slight thickness of 9.82 mm. A transparent case back with sapphire crystal shielding allows a clear view of the immaculate workings of the system. The silvered dial is lacquered and guilloche worked for an added element of intrigue. Cartier’s traditional black Roman numerals mark the hours, with an inner track providing smaller denominations of time. Crafted of 18K pink gold and steel, the crown is divided into two parts. The first part is embedded within the brancard, and the second is located on the side, with serrated edges and an imbedded blue sapphire cabochon. The bracelet consists of alternating links of 18K pink gold and steel made for a standard wrist size, and fastened by a hidden folding clasp.
Powered by Cartier’s calibre 1904 MC, the watch has a mechanical movement with automatic winding for precise timekeeping facilities. The sword shaped hands are made of blued steel and provide the hour, minute and second function. A calendar aperture at 3 o’clock displays the current date. Protected by sapphire crystal glass, the dial is scratch resistant and water proof to a depth of 30 m.
The First World War succeeded in inspiring a whole line of watches when Louis Cartier, the founder of the iconic Cartier brand fashioned watches inspired by the Renault tanks introduced by the Americans on the Western Front. These intricately designed timepieces born from an unusual inspiration were eventually introduced by the brand as the Tank collection in 1917, before they were launched in the markets in 1919.
The Tank collection has cases available in both rectangle and square shapes similar to the proportions of the tough war-machine. The case is further accentuated with a cabochon crown and sword shaped hour and minute hands set in a classic dial with Roman numerals, exuding a vintage feel. The distinctively patterned bracelet is the highlight of this collection. It consists of rectangular links ingeniously integrated with vertical sidebars, which bring to mind the rugged construction of the tank’s tracks used during war.
Originally introduced as far back as World War I, today this coveted collection is crafted using cutting-edge technology to feature enhanced functions such as calendar and power reserve displays. They also offer a broad range of movements from the simple yet precise Quartz to the technologically complicated and unerringly accurate automatic.
The Tank collection finds its manifestation in 6 ranges: Francaise, Americaine, Anglaise, MC, Solo and Louis Cartier.
