The history of the Cartier institution dates back to 1847, when it was established by Louis Francois Cartier, who became a seller to the court when Napoleon III came to power. Initially the success of the institution was attributed to jewellery, but a new dimension was added in 1904, when the first modern wristwatch came into being. The Cartier institution has boldly defined and redefined its initial glory.
Standing tall as one of the world’s oldest and most renowned watchmaker, the brand has introduced the Tank MC which is a variation of the initial Tank. The initial Tank was a homage to the victory of the Allied Powers in the First World War and still reflects fearlessness and valour.
Designed for men, the watch is an exemplary piece that has come to be known as ‘the masculine expression of elegance.’ A combination of masculinity with eternal beauty is what the watch seeks to create, with a bold alligator skin strap and an 18K pink gold case. A double folding buckle is attached to the strap.
The case measures 11.7mm thickness and is square in shape. It houses a faceted crown in pink gold embellished with a faceted sapphire. Roman numerals mark hours and a calendar aperture is impeccably placed at 3 o’ clock. The hands of the watch are sward shaped in blued steel.
The Swiss made masterpiece incorporates a self-winding mechanical movement with a caliber 1904 CH MC. This automatic movement designed by Cartier, is visible through the transparent sapphire case back. Not just a combination of beauty and boldness, but the watch is also a tribute to the fearlessness of the men who wore the Tank initially.
The First World War succeeded in inspiring a whole line of watches when Louis Cartier, the founder of the iconic Cartier brand fashioned watches inspired by the Renault tanks introduced by the Americans on the Western Front. These intricately designed timepieces born from an unusual inspiration were eventually introduced by the brand as the Tank collection in 1917, before they were launched in the markets in 1919.
The Tank collection has cases available in both rectangle and square shapes similar to the proportions of the tough war-machine. The case is further accentuated with a cabochon crown and sword shaped hour and minute hands set in a classic dial with Roman numerals, exuding a vintage feel. The distinctively patterned bracelet is the highlight of this collection. It consists of rectangular links ingeniously integrated with vertical sidebars, which bring to mind the rugged construction of the tank’s tracks used during war.
Originally introduced as far back as World War I, today this coveted collection is crafted using cutting-edge technology to feature enhanced functions such as calendar and power reserve displays. They also offer a broad range of movements from the simple yet precise Quartz to the technologically complicated and unerringly accurate automatic.
The Tank collection finds its manifestation in 6 ranges: Francaise, Americaine, Anglaise, MC, Solo and Louis Cartier.
