The Cartier institution, established in 1847 has witnessed a wide range of modifications to adjust to the changing fashion. Initially known as a ’jeweller of kings’, Louis Cartier, the man himself, catered to the needs of the crowned heads in Europe. He was granted official patronage by many of the royal families in Europe. With the introduction of the modern wristwatch, a whole new dimension was added to the company.
The Tank introduced in 1917, inspired by the Renault Tanks in the World War, was a tribute to the men who fought the war. Reflecting elements of fearlessness and boldness, the Tank collection exists even today with countless interpretations. One of them is the Tank Anglaise that was introduced in 2012.
With a sturdy construction and a contemporary look, the Tank Anglaise MC W5330001 reflects ‘a resolutely masculine edge.’ The MC is larger than other Anglaise models, with a case measuring 34.3mm x 44mm with a thickness of 9.5mm. A variation of the original Tank, this watch offers a generous time display with a larger slivered flinique dial and a faceted crown in pink gold embellished with a faceted sapphire. It incorporates elements of the initial Anglaise design such as the blued steel sward shaped hands and Roman numerals that are the signature hour markers of Cartier watches.
A semi matt alligator skin strap attached to a double adjustable folding buckle in 18K pink gold, adds to the attractiveness of the timepiece. Additionally it incorporates a calendar aperture placed at 3 o’ clock.
The timepiece is self-winding with movement produced by the Cartier manufacturer, the caliber 1904 PS MC. Its meticulous mechanism is visible through the transparent sapphire case back. It is also water resistant up to 3 bars, that is 30m and the sapphire crystal is scratch resistant.
The First World War succeeded in inspiring a whole line of watches when Louis Cartier, the founder of the iconic Cartier brand fashioned watches inspired by the Renault tanks introduced by the Americans on the Western Front. These intricately designed timepieces born from an unusual inspiration were eventually introduced by the brand as the Tank collection in 1917, before they were launched in the markets in 1919.
The Tank collection has cases available in both rectangle and square shapes similar to the proportions of the tough war-machine. The case is further accentuated with a cabochon crown and sword shaped hour and minute hands set in a classic dial with Roman numerals, exuding a vintage feel. The distinctively patterned bracelet is the highlight of this collection. It consists of rectangular links ingeniously integrated with vertical sidebars, which bring to mind the rugged construction of the tank’s tracks used during war.
Originally introduced as far back as World War I, today this coveted collection is crafted using cutting-edge technology to feature enhanced functions such as calendar and power reserve displays. They also offer a broad range of movements from the simple yet precise Quartz to the technologically complicated and unerringly accurate automatic.
The Tank collection finds its manifestation in 6 ranges: Francaise, Americaine, Anglaise, MC, Solo and Louis Cartier.
