The Cartier institution is renowned for its exemplary excellence in the art of watch making. In its initial years, its success was attributed to jewellery making and it had a reputation of being the ‘Jeweller of Kings and, King of Jewellers.’
With the introduction of the wristwatch, which was initiated by Louis Francaise Cartier, the man himself, the brand had a new dimension added to it. Standing tall as one of the world’s most splendid watch makers, the institution has a plethora of collections one of which is the Tank Anglaise. The initial tank was introduced in 1917, drawing inspiration from the Renault tanks used in the First World War. A magnificent timepiece, it honoured the allied victory that ended the war. The piece was simple yet legendary and exists with various interpretations even today.
Incorporating the initial design, the model preserves the feel of the mighty tanks. Designed for men, the case is made of rhodium finished 18K white gold, measuring 36.2mm x 47mm in diameter and 9.82mm in thickness. It features a faceted crown and a faceted sapphire. Consisting of a lacquered silver flinique dial, it features sward shaped hands and Roman numerals as hour markers. It also consists of a calendar aperture at 3 o’ clock. It also incorporates a transparent case back with sapphire crystal. Thus you can easily observe the working of is mechanism.
The strap made of the finest alligator skin leather, makes the watch a bold reinterpretation of the original.
Ensuring durability and precision, the Swiss made timepiece is 30m water resistant. The watch works with a mechanical self-winding movement caliber 1904 MC. This masterpiece is one that adds to the outstanding heritage of the Tank, ‘The history of a style.’
The First World War succeeded in inspiring a whole line of watches when Louis Cartier, the founder of the iconic Cartier brand fashioned watches inspired by the Renault tanks introduced by the Americans on the Western Front. These intricately designed timepieces born from an unusual inspiration were eventually introduced by the brand as the Tank collection in 1917, before they were launched in the markets in 1919.
The Tank collection has cases available in both rectangle and square shapes similar to the proportions of the tough war-machine. The case is further accentuated with a cabochon crown and sword shaped hour and minute hands set in a classic dial with Roman numerals, exuding a vintage feel. The distinctively patterned bracelet is the highlight of this collection. It consists of rectangular links ingeniously integrated with vertical sidebars, which bring to mind the rugged construction of the tank’s tracks used during war.
Originally introduced as far back as World War I, today this coveted collection is crafted using cutting-edge technology to feature enhanced functions such as calendar and power reserve displays. They also offer a broad range of movements from the simple yet precise Quartz to the technologically complicated and unerringly accurate automatic.
The Tank collection finds its manifestation in 6 ranges: Francaise, Americaine, Anglaise, MC, Solo and Louis Cartier.
