The Cartier institution, known today as one the resplendent face in the sphere of watch making, was at one time reputed for catering to the needs of royalty. Born in 1819, Louis Francoise Cartier entered the jewellery trade as an apprentice under Alfred Picard. It was not long after which, he established his own brand in 1947, quickly making a mark on Parisian society. The brand has boldly invented and reinvented itself to match the changing needs of fashion and society.
A piece that incorporated a simple yet stunning design, the Tank is seen adorning the wrists of many even today. The classic Tank drew its inspiration from the Renault tanks that were in use during the First World War. Since its creation, the timepiece has had a plethora of variations, one of which is the Tank Anglaise that was introduced in 2012. Preserving its initial design aesthetic, the piece incorporates a sleek contemporary edge.
Designed for men, this ravishing piece is made of 18K yellow gold. Crafted of the finest material, the case measures 36.2mm x 47mm and is 9.82mm in thickness. It features a faceted crown and a faceted sapphire. An amalgamation of gold and silver, the timepiece consists of a lacquered silver flinique dial. It features sward shaped hands and Roman numerals as hour markers. It also consists of a calendar aperture at 3 o’ clock.
An alligator skin leather strap differentiates it from other Anglaise models, making this one a bold reinterpretation of the original.
Ensuring durability, the Swiss made timepiece is 30m water resistant. The sapphire crystal is also scratch resistant and anti-reflective. The watch works with a mechanical self-winding movement caliber 1904 MC. The variation of the original Tank attains absolute perfection; it ‘reinterprets the original model with proportion to spare.’
The First World War succeeded in inspiring a whole line of watches when Louis Cartier, the founder of the iconic Cartier brand fashioned watches inspired by the Renault tanks introduced by the Americans on the Western Front. These intricately designed timepieces born from an unusual inspiration were eventually introduced by the brand as the Tank collection in 1917, before they were launched in the markets in 1919.
The Tank collection has cases available in both rectangle and square shapes similar to the proportions of the tough war-machine. The case is further accentuated with a cabochon crown and sword shaped hour and minute hands set in a classic dial with Roman numerals, exuding a vintage feel. The distinctively patterned bracelet is the highlight of this collection. It consists of rectangular links ingeniously integrated with vertical sidebars, which bring to mind the rugged construction of the tank’s tracks used during war.
Originally introduced as far back as World War I, today this coveted collection is crafted using cutting-edge technology to feature enhanced functions such as calendar and power reserve displays. They also offer a broad range of movements from the simple yet precise Quartz to the technologically complicated and unerringly accurate automatic.
The Tank collection finds its manifestation in 6 ranges: Francaise, Americaine, Anglaise, MC, Solo and Louis Cartier.
