Cartier has the reputation of being a global phenomenon in the art of jewellery and watch making, ever since its inception in 1874. Initially creating only jewellery pieces for the crowned heads in Europe, Cartier was renowned for being the ‘Jeweller of kings and king of Jewellers.’With the advent of the modern wristwatch in 1904, a new dimension was added to the institution. Louis Francoise Cartier, the man himself drew inspiration from the Renault tanks used in the world wars and made an exquisite timepiece mimicking the lines of the tank, in 1917.
The Anglaise Tank introduced in 2012 was a creation amalgamating the initial design of the Tank with a contemporary touch to it. With various models, the Anglaise reiterates why Cartier is known for its exemplary magnificence.
Designed for women, the model w5310030 is a piece meticulous in all aspects, and incorporates an 18K yellow gold case measuring 29.8mm x 39.2mm with a thickness of 9.5mm. It is characterised by a lacquered silver flinque dial and roman numerals as hour markers with sward shaped blued steel hands. Consisting of a 9 sided crown embellished with a sapphire, the piece accentuates the elegance of the woman in possession of it.
Breaking free from all restrictions, the watch consists of an alligator skin strap with an 18K yellow gold ardillon buckle. Furthermore, a calendar aperture is impeccably placed at 3 o’ clock.
From the outset, the Cartier has reflected in its timepieces durability. This watch is no exception; with a scratch resistant sapphire crystal as the case window and water resistance to a depth of 30m, it proves its excellence in all respects. It incorporates a mechanical movement with automatic winding Cartier caliber 007. Hence, precision; a key tenet of Cartier designs, is also ensured by this piece.
The First World War succeeded in inspiring a whole line of watches when Louis Cartier, the founder of the iconic Cartier brand fashioned watches inspired by the Renault tanks introduced by the Americans on the Western Front. These intricately designed timepieces born from an unusual inspiration were eventually introduced by the brand as the Tank collection in 1917, before they were launched in the markets in 1919.
The Tank collection has cases available in both rectangle and square shapes similar to the proportions of the tough war-machine. The case is further accentuated with a cabochon crown and sword shaped hour and minute hands set in a classic dial with Roman numerals, exuding a vintage feel. The distinctively patterned bracelet is the highlight of this collection. It consists of rectangular links ingeniously integrated with vertical sidebars, which bring to mind the rugged construction of the tank’s tracks used during war.
Originally introduced as far back as World War I, today this coveted collection is crafted using cutting-edge technology to feature enhanced functions such as calendar and power reserve displays. They also offer a broad range of movements from the simple yet precise Quartz to the technologically complicated and unerringly accurate automatic.
The Tank collection finds its manifestation in 6 ranges: Francaise, Americaine, Anglaise, MC, Solo and Louis Cartier.
