Inspired directly by the ‘Tank’ masterpiece, the Tank de Cartier collection of wristwatches is the personification of timeless allure and cutting edge technology. Commemorating the structural harmony of its namesake, the first Tank wristwatch was crafted in the year 1917. Minimalist design and refined allure were presented in the styling of this watch, with four lines, two parallel shafts made from gold or platinum, a sapphire cabochon on top of the widning crown and a leather strap. This collection revolutionized the use of rectangular cases at a time when round cases were all the rage. The Tank Anglaise series was released with much pomp in the year 2012, a direct inspiration from the Tank collection.
A purely feminine watch, the Tank Anglaise marks new territories in the watch making world in the quest for pure design. With its winding crown integrated into the shaft, the Tank Anglaise perfectly embodies Louis Cartier’s aesthetic and his desire for a seamless design by presenting a wholesome model. The dial is silvered and quintessentially wrought with Roman numerals. Cartier’s signature blue steel hands in the shape of dainty swords adorn the dial as hour and minute markers. An 18 carat rose gold and steel bracelet with a folding clasp equips the model to match the case material. The straps are seamlessly integrated into the rectangular case which features straight clean-cut lines. Its nine-sided rose gold crown fits perfectly into the centre of the symmetrical design.
The new Tank Anglaise W5310019 model cuts a dashing figure dimensioned at 30 mm x 25 mm case. It is water resistant up to 30 meters/ 100 feet. An 18 carat rose gold and steel case set is fixed with a scratch proof sapphire crystal glass. This model is powered by an automatic Cartier mechanical movement.
The First World War succeeded in inspiring a whole line of watches when Louis Cartier, the founder of the iconic Cartier brand fashioned watches inspired by the Renault tanks introduced by the Americans on the Western Front. These intricately designed timepieces born from an unusual inspiration were eventually introduced by the brand as the Tank collection in 1917, before they were launched in the markets in 1919.
The Tank collection has cases available in both rectangle and square shapes similar to the proportions of the tough war-machine. The case is further accentuated with a cabochon crown and sword shaped hour and minute hands set in a classic dial with Roman numerals, exuding a vintage feel. The distinctively patterned bracelet is the highlight of this collection. It consists of rectangular links ingeniously integrated with vertical sidebars, which bring to mind the rugged construction of the tank’s tracks used during war.
Originally introduced as far back as World War I, today this coveted collection is crafted using cutting-edge technology to feature enhanced functions such as calendar and power reserve displays. They also offer a broad range of movements from the simple yet precise Quartz to the technologically complicated and unerringly accurate automatic.
The Tank collection finds its manifestation in 6 ranges: Francaise, Americaine, Anglaise, MC, Solo and Louis Cartier.
