Ever since its inception, in 1874, the Cartier institution has been synonymous with objects of beauty and style. A new dimension; watch making was added to the company in 1904, changing the face of watch making forever. Known for his exemplary workmanship and creativity, Louis Cartier created the Tank collection, drawing inspiration from the Renault tanks that were in use in the World War I, with the subsequent tank design which combined elements of elegance with a rugged look. A legend was created with the model, which is commemorated by watch designers all over the world, even today.
The Tank de Cartier collection is known for echoing ‘harmony and grace.’ Adding a modern edge is the Tank Anglaise that takes the design to a whole new level, marking ‘a step forward in the quest for pure design.’
Giving the original model a new dimension, the Tank Anglaise W5310004 concentrates on perfect alignment and reinforced lines. The Swiss made masterpiece, designed for women, consists of an 18K rose gold case, measuring 36.2mm x 47mm in diameter and 9.82mm in thickness. A 9 sided crown set with a sapphire. makes it an exquisite piece. Additionally it also incorporates a lacquered silver flinque dial with blued steel sward hands.
The alligator skin leather strap is attached with the help of an 18K pink gold folding buckle. It consists of a transparent case back with a sapphire crystal. Roman numerals mark hours and a calendar aperture is impeccably placed at 3 o’ clock.
Precision being a key tenet of the brand, the timepiece incorporates mechanical movement with automatic winding Cartier caliber 1904 MC. Standing for lesser embellishments and concentrating more on making it an everlasting timepiece, the brand succeeds in ensuring durability to the timepiece; it is 30m water resistant and the sapphire crystal is scratch resistant.
The First World War succeeded in inspiring a whole line of watches when Louis Cartier, the founder of the iconic Cartier brand fashioned watches inspired by the Renault tanks introduced by the Americans on the Western Front. These intricately designed timepieces born from an unusual inspiration were eventually introduced by the brand as the Tank collection in 1917, before they were launched in the markets in 1919.
The Tank collection has cases available in both rectangle and square shapes similar to the proportions of the tough war-machine. The case is further accentuated with a cabochon crown and sword shaped hour and minute hands set in a classic dial with Roman numerals, exuding a vintage feel. The distinctively patterned bracelet is the highlight of this collection. It consists of rectangular links ingeniously integrated with vertical sidebars, which bring to mind the rugged construction of the tank’s tracks used during war.
Originally introduced as far back as World War I, today this coveted collection is crafted using cutting-edge technology to feature enhanced functions such as calendar and power reserve displays. They also offer a broad range of movements from the simple yet precise Quartz to the technologically complicated and unerringly accurate automatic.
The Tank collection finds its manifestation in 6 ranges: Francaise, Americaine, Anglaise, MC, Solo and Louis Cartier.
