Cartier was established in 1847 by Louis-Francois Cartier in a humble abode in Paris. Its roots as a jewellery workshop are apparent in the exemplary aesthetic refinery displayed in each and every watch, with astonishingly modern technology to complement the horologic experience.
Launched in 1917, the Tank is an iconic collection inspired by Louis Cartier’s experience in the First World War. Reminiscent of the Renault tanks used in the Western Front, watches from this collection boast striking features that set them apart from the rest. Louis Cartier himself made the first Tank as a present for General John Pershing of the American Expeditionary Force. The collection has since evolved to include variations such as the Louis in 1922, the Americaine in 1989, and the Francaise in 1996. Other versions include the Anglaise, MC and Solo.
The Tank Solo model number W5200002 for ladies, is a delicate piece boasting a rectangular case typical to the line, with the dimensions 31 x 24.4 mm and a super thin frame of 5.55 mm. Crafted of 18K yellow gold and steel, the case houses a silvered opaline white dial, with the brand’s traditional black Roman numerals demarcating the hours in a bold yet elegant manner. Smaller denominations of time are marked by a rectangular inner rail-track. The inimitable 18K yellow gold crown is beaded and inlaid with a blue synthetic spinel, with scratch resistant sapphire crystal glass protecting the ensemble. A round scaled black alligator skin strap fastens the watch securely to the wearer’s wrist with an 18K yellow gold ardillon buckle.
Cartier’s calibre 157 powered quartz movement of the Tank Solo W5200002, keeps immaculate time for the watch enthusiasts. Hour and minute functions are provided by hands made of blued steel, which are perfectly aligned to the markers for exact precision. The watch is water resistant to a depth of 30 metres.
The First World War succeeded in inspiring a whole line of watches when Louis Cartier, the founder of the iconic Cartier brand fashioned watches inspired by the Renault tanks introduced by the Americans on the Western Front. These intricately designed timepieces born from an unusual inspiration were eventually introduced by the brand as the Tank collection in 1917, before they were launched in the markets in 1919.
The Tank collection has cases available in both rectangle and square shapes similar to the proportions of the tough war-machine. The case is further accentuated with a cabochon crown and sword shaped hour and minute hands set in a classic dial with Roman numerals, exuding a vintage feel. The distinctively patterned bracelet is the highlight of this collection. It consists of rectangular links ingeniously integrated with vertical sidebars, which bring to mind the rugged construction of the tank’s tracks used during war.
Originally introduced as far back as World War I, today this coveted collection is crafted using cutting-edge technology to feature enhanced functions such as calendar and power reserve displays. They also offer a broad range of movements from the simple yet precise Quartz to the technologically complicated and unerringly accurate automatic.
The Tank collection finds its manifestation in 6 ranges: Francaise, Americaine, Anglaise, MC, Solo and Louis Cartier.
