The history of the Cartier institution dates back to 1847 when Louis Cartier established the brand in Paris, France. The brand had a reputation of being ‘A Jeweller of Kings, and A King of Jewellers.’ In 1904, a new dimension was added to this renowned jewellery making company, the art of wrist watch making.
In 1917, the man, Louis Cartier himself thought of a unique design that drew its inspiration from the Renault tanks that were in use in the First World War. Mimicking its lines seamlessly, the design had a simple yet stunning look; it featured four lines with two parallel shafts made of gold or platinum. With an iconic design, the revolutionary piece changed the art of watch making forever. Tank, ‘The history of a style’, has varied additions to the collection with a wide range of pieces that still represent the exceptional heritage of the original piece.
Designed for men, the Cartier Tank Americaine W2603256 is a timepiece that reflects all the elements of that the Tank, as represented in the last century. ‘The powerfully elegant tank Americaine watch is for connoisseurs only’. The 18K rhodiumized white gold case measures 45.1mm x 26.6 mm and its thickness is 8.85mm. It incorporates a black alligator leather strap with an 18K rhodiumized white gold ardillon buckle. With an 8 sided crown set, a faceted sapphire and Roman numerals as hour markers, the watch is majestically transformed into a brilliant piece. A calendar aperture at 6 o’ clock adds to the elegance of the watch.
The Swiss made masterpiece attains perfection in all respects. It is water resistant to 30 m and the sapphire crystal is scratch resistant, rendering the watch durable. It works with a mechanical movement and is accompanied by the automatic winding Cartier Caliber 120.
The First World War succeeded in inspiring a whole line of watches when Louis Cartier, the founder of the iconic Cartier brand fashioned watches inspired by the Renault tanks introduced by the Americans on the Western Front. These intricately designed timepieces born from an unusual inspiration were eventually introduced by the brand as the Tank collection in 1917, before they were launched in the markets in 1919.
The Tank collection has cases available in both rectangle and square shapes similar to the proportions of the tough war-machine. The case is further accentuated with a cabochon crown and sword shaped hour and minute hands set in a classic dial with Roman numerals, exuding a vintage feel. The distinctively patterned bracelet is the highlight of this collection. It consists of rectangular links ingeniously integrated with vertical sidebars, which bring to mind the rugged construction of the tank’s tracks used during war.
Originally introduced as far back as World War I, today this coveted collection is crafted using cutting-edge technology to feature enhanced functions such as calendar and power reserve displays. They also offer a broad range of movements from the simple yet precise Quartz to the technologically complicated and unerringly accurate automatic.
The Tank collection finds its manifestation in 6 ranges: Francaise, Americaine, Anglaise, MC, Solo and Louis Cartier.
