Established in 1847 by Louis Franoise Cartier, the Cartier brand not only attracted the world’s most eminent private clients, but was also granted official patronage in the official courts of England, Russia, Greece, Spain, Portugal and Siam. Although initially catering to the crowned heads as a jewellery maker, the institution added a new dimension in 1904, when the first wristwatch was presented to Santos Dumont by Cartier himself.
This iconic piece created a hallmark in the history of watch making, the Santos stood prominent as a daring statement made by adventurous men all over the world. From the outset, the Cartier Santos Dumont watches have been elegant, small and accurate. A varied range of watches have been added to the collection, defining and redefining the face of the collection, yet adhering to the initial aesthetic of the very first wristwatch.
Homage to the fearless men who fought wars in the 20th century, the Cartier W2020068 is a model that makes a strong statement. Made of 18K rose gold, the case set measures 38mm x 48.4mm, and has a thickness of 9.3mm. It is characterised by a faceted crown set with a faceted sapphire. A grey galvanised flinique dial with sward shaped hands in rhodium finished steel, give the watch its unique design. Roman numerals mark the hours and minute markers are in the inner ring. With a strap in grey alligator skin and a calendar aperture at 12 o’ clock, the watch stands as the epitome of creativity and precision intertwined.
A scratch resistant sapphire crystal and a water resistance of 30 m, makes it a long lasting innovation. Ultimate horological precision is achieved as the watch also features a power reserve at 6 o’ clock.
Who knew a simple request by renowned aviator and friend, Alberto Santos Dumont, would bring Louis Cartier to design one of the first ever men’s wrist watches. When Alberto Dumont expressed what a bother it was to glance at a pocket watch while flying, Cartier took it upon him to come up with a solution, and designed a wristwatch unlike any other of its time. From then on, Alberto Santos Dumont wore his watch every time he took flight. He was renowned throughout Europe, and thus his Cartier watch became as famous as him. People began to get more and more curious about what he was wearing on his hand, and Cartier had the answer. This gave birth to the “Santos”, which fast became extremely popular with men all over the globe. Louis Cartier then went on to collaborate with movement maker Edmond Jaeger to mass-produce the Santos, which had the voyager’s name and went on sale officially in 1911, as the Santos de Cartier.
In 1904, Louis Cartier designed the first ever men’s wrist watch with a square bezel, leather strap and a small buckle. At first, Cartier had only used precious metals and leather as the straps for the watches, but in 1978, he delivered a relatively lower-priced steel/gold watch, preceded by an all-steel watch. The plate bezel affixed with tiny screws became a lasting feature of the Santos de Cartier range of watches. The Cartier Santos watches are also water-resistant up to thirty metres.
The Santos de Cartier watch is crafted in steel or gold, also featuring a graceful coupling of the two metals, with or without the embellishment of precious stones. Coming in a metal or leather skin strap, the timepiece rests easy and securely on your wrist. The case has a minimalist aesthetic integrated with rectangular rounded corners, evocative of its proud history, which called for a lithe and functional device. Most watches in this range have clearly readable white dials that have bold black Roman numerals and luminescent black oxidized-steel sword-shaped hands for enhanced visibility in low light conditions. Select models such as a few from the Santos Dumont line feature a stunning hawk motif- vivid in its imagery, rich in its use of precious metals and stones yet subtle enough to conform to the foremost ethos of the collection- practicality.
