Cartier; an institution founded in 1847 by Louis Francoise Cartier, has a long history of sales to royalty and celebrities. Dating back to 1904, the Santos was the first modern watch that was ever created.
Pilot Alberto Santos Dumont complained to his friend Cartier about the obstacles of having both hands occupied while at work, rendering him oblivious about time. Amidst war and destruction, Cartier created the Santos watch with bracelet attachment horns integrated into the case while the entire world watched in amazement.
An iconic innovation in the art of modern watch making, the Santos ‘rose to the ranks of a classic that would defy the hands of time ‘.
The legend lives on today with its modern interpretation, among which the Cartier Santos Dumont W2006951 stands prominent. A symbol of the glorious past of Cartier’s success with a hint of contemporary edge, the timepiece consists of an 18K rose gold case with brown leather straps. It features ivory sword shaped hands with Roman numeral hour markers. Minute markers are placed meticulously on the outer ring. A gold octagonal crown set with a faceted sapphire adds to the majestic exterior of the watch. The gold bezel case set measures 44.6mm x 34.6mm in diameter and 5.58mm in thickness.
A manual winding Caliber 430 MC movement is featured in this Swiss Made luxury watch. Furthermore, a deployment clasp is added to the body. It is also water resistant up to 30 m, making it durable in the long run. Look no further if you are searching for the ultimate timepiece that combines excellence in all aspects, be it technical or a perfect design. It pays a tribute to fearless men all around the globe, a piece that would indeed ‘defy the hands of time.’
Who knew a simple request by renowned aviator and friend, Alberto Santos Dumont, would bring Louis Cartier to design one of the first ever men’s wrist watches. When Alberto Dumont expressed what a bother it was to glance at a pocket watch while flying, Cartier took it upon him to come up with a solution, and designed a wristwatch unlike any other of its time. From then on, Alberto Santos Dumont wore his watch every time he took flight. He was renowned throughout Europe, and thus his Cartier watch became as famous as him. People began to get more and more curious about what he was wearing on his hand, and Cartier had the answer. This gave birth to the “Santos”, which fast became extremely popular with men all over the globe. Louis Cartier then went on to collaborate with movement maker Edmond Jaeger to mass-produce the Santos, which had the voyager’s name and went on sale officially in 1911, as the Santos de Cartier.
In 1904, Louis Cartier designed the first ever men’s wrist watch with a square bezel, leather strap and a small buckle. At first, Cartier had only used precious metals and leather as the straps for the watches, but in 1978, he delivered a relatively lower-priced steel/gold watch, preceded by an all-steel watch. The plate bezel affixed with tiny screws became a lasting feature of the Santos de Cartier range of watches. The Cartier Santos watches are also water-resistant up to thirty metres.
The Santos de Cartier watch is crafted in steel or gold, also featuring a graceful coupling of the two metals, with or without the embellishment of precious stones. Coming in a metal or leather skin strap, the timepiece rests easy and securely on your wrist. The case has a minimalist aesthetic integrated with rectangular rounded corners, evocative of its proud history, which called for a lithe and functional device. Most watches in this range have clearly readable white dials that have bold black Roman numerals and luminescent black oxidized-steel sword-shaped hands for enhanced visibility in low light conditions. Select models such as a few from the Santos Dumont line feature a stunning hawk motif- vivid in its imagery, rich in its use of precious metals and stones yet subtle enough to conform to the foremost ethos of the collection- practicality.
