Established in 1847 by a humble jewellery maker, Cartier is today renowned worldwide as the maestro in fine watchmaking. Patronised by royals over the years, including Kind Edward VII of Britain, who went so far as to proclaim it “the King of Jewellers and the Jeweller to Kings “, the brand has proved its mettle in appeasing the most experienced of watch aficionados.
The Santos collection consists of the most iconic line of watches created by Cartier. Crafted personally by Louis Cartier in 1904, the Santos was the first wristwatch of its kind, made as a gift to the famous aviator and Cartier’s dear friend Alberto Santos Dumont. Several reinterpretations of this line have been offered by the brand, including the Galbee, Santos-Dumont, and the Santos 100.
The Santos de Cartier Galbee model number W20012C4 features soft lines and a small dial that make it ideal for the elegant lady. With dimensions of 26.2 x 34.8mm, the steel case is merely 6mm thick, seamlessly blending traditional designs with a sleek, modern outlook. The crown, made of steel, is moulded into 7 facets inlaid with a synthetic blue spinel. Set with an 18k yellow gold bezel, the watch retains the Santos’ classic aesthetics. The dial is silvered with a matte finish that exudes a refined ambience of feminine sophistication, with bold black Roman numerals marking the hours. The blued steel sword shaped hands move in perfect tandem with the time indexes for accurate time reading. The steel bracelet is studded with the line’s iconic screws in 18K yellow gold, and fastens securely to the wrist by means of a hidden folding clasp.
Cartier’s calibre 157 powered quartz movement allows for exemplary timekeeping precision. The ensemble is also water resistant to a depth of 30m.
Who knew a simple request by renowned aviator and friend, Alberto Santos Dumont, would bring Louis Cartier to design one of the first ever men’s wrist watches. When Alberto Dumont expressed what a bother it was to glance at a pocket watch while flying, Cartier took it upon him to come up with a solution, and designed a wristwatch unlike any other of its time. From then on, Alberto Santos Dumont wore his watch every time he took flight. He was renowned throughout Europe, and thus his Cartier watch became as famous as him. People began to get more and more curious about what he was wearing on his hand, and Cartier had the answer. This gave birth to the “Santos”, which fast became extremely popular with men all over the globe. Louis Cartier then went on to collaborate with movement maker Edmond Jaeger to mass-produce the Santos, which had the voyager’s name and went on sale officially in 1911, as the Santos de Cartier.
In 1904, Louis Cartier designed the first ever men’s wrist watch with a square bezel, leather strap and a small buckle. At first, Cartier had only used precious metals and leather as the straps for the watches, but in 1978, he delivered a relatively lower-priced steel/gold watch, preceded by an all-steel watch. The plate bezel affixed with tiny screws became a lasting feature of the Santos de Cartier range of watches. The Cartier Santos watches are also water-resistant up to thirty metres.
The Santos de Cartier watch is crafted in steel or gold, also featuring a graceful coupling of the two metals, with or without the embellishment of precious stones. Coming in a metal or leather skin strap, the timepiece rests easy and securely on your wrist. The case has a minimalist aesthetic integrated with rectangular rounded corners, evocative of its proud history, which called for a lithe and functional device. Most watches in this range have clearly readable white dials that have bold black Roman numerals and luminescent black oxidized-steel sword-shaped hands for enhanced visibility in low light conditions. Select models such as a few from the Santos Dumont line feature a stunning hawk motif- vivid in its imagery, rich in its use of precious metals and stones yet subtle enough to conform to the foremost ethos of the collection- practicality.
