Ulysse Nardin is one of the most remarkable watch brands in the world. In its long and celebrated journey of more than 150 years, the brand has created numerous intriguing timepieces and won a passel of awards at International exhibitions. However, it is best known for its precision marine chronometers that were till the 1950s used by more than 50 of the world’s top navies and shipping companies. Earlier bought by Kering and now owned by  Sowind Group SA, Ulysse Nardin is a powerhouse of excellent watchmaking skills and craftsmanship that enables it to create watches with state-of-the-art designs and ingenuine Swiss-made mechanisms.

Ulysse Nardin was born in 1823 in Le Locle, Switzerland. He was raised and first apprenticed by his father, Léonard-Frédéric Nardin, one of the many part-time watchmakers in the Jura mountains who would use the art to support their family during the long snowy winter. Subsequently, the interest to pursue a career in horology came naturally to Ulysse. His first big step in that direction was working with the two of most talented and revered watchmakers of the time, Frederic-William Dubois and Louis JeanRichard-dit-Bressel. Thanks to his intrinsic talent, he opened his own company only at the age of 23 in Le Locle, where the brand is still headquartered. Over the years, Ulysse Nardin brand won many competitions and awards. In 1876, post the demise of Ulysse Nardin at the age of 53, his son Paul-David Nardin headed the brand.

The Naval Connection

By the 1900s, the brand has gained a solid reputation for its marine chronometers. In 1905, it partnered with the United States Navy for the Precision Torpedo Boat Timepieces competition organised by the Washington Naval Observatory. The goal here was to supply the US Navy with the best available on-board chronometers. As expected, Ulysse Nardin won the competition and kept winning it for many years in a row and became the official supplier of the US Navy.

The Quartz Crisis

By the time 1975 rolled around, Ulysse Nardin had won a whopping 4,300 watchmaking awards and had several patents to its name. However, a phenomenon that rocked the watchmaking world managed to destabilise Ulysse Nardin as well—the infamous quartz crisis. The company had to be put up for sale, but gratefully, it was bought by the genius Rolf W Schnyder. Culminating from a fruitful partnership with watchmaker and visionary, Dr Ludwig Oechslin, Ulysse Nardin released the magnificent ‘Trilogy of Time’ astronomical watches. The first watch, which was launched in 1985, was the Astrolabium Galileo Galilei, named after the legendary astronomer. It displays local time, solar time, the orbits of the sun and the moon, eclipses and the positions of a few major stars in our skies. Its functionality bagged it a record with the Guinness Book of World Records for being the most functional watch in the world in 1989. Next came the Planetarium Copernicus in 1988, and in 1992, the brand released the Tellurium Johannes Kepler. The artistry, meticulous craftsmanship and functionality of these timepieces are unmatched, and they have ensured that Ulysse Nardin will always hold a significant place in horological history.

The Modern Accomplishments

In 2001, the watch industry was going through something of a slump. That’s when, after years of research, Ulysse Nardin decided to launch the inimitable Freak. This watch was unlike anything the world had ever seen before, with its revolutionary seven-day carrousel tourbillon. The Freak had no true dial, crown or hands, and that’s what made it path-breaking. The unique timepiece had its movement rotate on itself to show the time. In 2003, the company launched Sonata, a multifunction mechanical and musical timepiece, a high-end minute repeater that won the innovation prize the following year.

The innovation didn’t stop there. In 2005, Ulysse Nardin launched the Freak Diamond Heart, which had a new patented Dual Ulysse Escapement, which had been crafted from diamonds. By 2006, the company had its first in-house self-winding base calibre, UN-160, a highly complicated movement. The year 2007 spelt the launch of Freak DIAMonSIL. This was another escapement that the brand made using an altogether unique material—a cutting-edge combination of diamond and silicium (or silicon).

Since then, Ulysse Nardin has seemingly been in competition with itself. They have released several movements that have catapulted the innovation and precision of Ulysse Nardin’s watchmaking by leaps and bounds. Not just mechanically precise and boasting superlative craftsmanship, their timepieces can also be likened to pieces of magnificent art that can be strapped to one’s wrist.

For more than 150 years, Ulysse Nardin has been showing the world what true watchmaking is all about, through its innovation and independence in the craft. The brand’s horological quest revolves around five collections: Marine, Diver, Classico, Blast, and Freak. These five pillars of excellent watchmaking and Ulysse Nardin’s inventive spirit have earned its membership in the most exclusive circle of Swiss watchmaking, the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie (FHH).

The brand is revered among watch aficionados for a reason. Hundreds of years ago, Ulysse Nardin represented the true essence of watchmaking. Independence, innovation, and ingenuity. And this spirit defines the brand even today.
